Greenmart by Swiggy
a sustainable grocery delivery service that eliminates single-use plastic by using reusable, returnable packaging
problem
Online grocery delivery has made food purchasing faster and more convenient, but it has also normalized excessive single-use flexible plastic packaging. These materials are difficult to recycle, often contaminated, and largely end up in landfills — with consumers having little visibility or control over the packaging decisions being made on their behalf.
solution
Greenmart introduces a reuse-and-refill packaging system embedded within Swiggy Instamart, transforming packaging from a disposable byproduct into a managed, returnable asset. By aligning digital choice, logistics, and infrastructure, the system enables plastic reduction at scale.
The project aims to demonstrate how upstream service and system design can meaningfully reduce flexible plastic usage in the food grocery sector, while maintaining operational efficiency and consumer convenience.
Greenmart is a conceptual service design project situated within India’s rapidly growing online grocery ecosystem. The project explores how upstream innovation — spanning packaging design, logistics, and digital experience — can help large-scale platforms like Swiggy move toward a circular packaging model.
